The National Cleaner Production Centre South Africa (NCPC-SA) held its third biennial Industrial Efficiency Conference, in Cape Town, from the 14th - 15th September UNDER THE THEME: “Transition to a low carbon economy”.
The event was aimed at equipping industry, including small, medium and large manufacturers, retailers and businesses, with an awareness of how to benefit from the implementation of resource efficient and cleaner production (RECP) in their processes in their journey to becoming cleaner, more sustainable businesses.
ACA threads a Cape Town based sewing thread manufacturer and supplier is reaping the benefits of implementing energy saving measures to reduce energy consumption. With the support of the National Cleaner Production Centre, South Africa (NCPC-SA), ACA threads implemented various energy efficiency interventions including the installation of a 131 kW rooftop solar PV system, in 2015, which is now generating energy savings of R500 000 a year. Andre Page, NCPC-SA Project Manager explains that this project was launched in 2014 as part of the NCPC-SA Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production Programme (RECP).
Between 1 April 2016 and 31 March 2017, energy, water and materials savings valued at R 72.8 million were measured in 33 companies that had implemented resource efficient and cleaner production (RECP) interventions in their production plants. In addition, potential savings of R 383 million per annum were identified in 128 plants through RECP assessments. The National Cleaner Production Centre South Africa (NCPC-SA) announced the savings in the annual highlights of its programmes for the 2016/17 financial year.
